Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed goalkeeper Joao Virginia from Sporting CP, the club announced on August 27. The 26-year-old has agreed to a three-year deal and returns to English football with a decade of experience in the country.
This move comes as the squad manages several absences, with Kieran Trippier, Rafiki Saïd, and Yerson Mosquera currently sidelined. The signing was confirmed by the club. "Cesar rightly insisted this window that we must be patient and only sign players who improve our squad and are committed to the club, and Joao fits that description," Shi said.
Joao Virginia's career is deeply rooted in English football. He first moved to England as a teenager to join Arsenal's academy, spending three years there before turning professional with Everton. His senior debut came for the Toffees in the Carabao Cup in September 2020. He later made his Premier League debut against Burnley and his FA Cup debut against Manchester City that same season.
His journey includes a loan spell at Reading, where he played in the Championship and even featured at Molineux in a Carabao Cup tie. More recent loans took him to Sporting CP, where he won the Taca de Liga, and to Cambuur in the Dutch Eredivisie. Last season, he made seven appearances for Sporting, including one in the Champions League.
Head coach Cesar Peixoto welcomed the addition. "He is a homegrown player and knows English football well, so he should be a good fit for the squad and the club and will be well received by staff and his teammates," Peixoto stated. Virginia joins a goalkeeping department that also recently saw the return of John Ruddy, providing experienced competition and depth.
