Former Wolverhampton Wanderers stalwart Matt Doherty has set his sights on a Premier League return after signing for Championship side Sheffield United. The 34-year-old defender, who made 389 appearances across two spells at Molineux, joins the Blades on a one-year deal with an option for another season.
What happened?
Doherty left Wolves this summer after 13 years with the club, having initially joined from Bohemians in 2010 for just £75,000. The Republic of Ireland international, who also played for Tottenham and Atletico Madrid during his career, will now face his former team in the Championship this season.
Why it matters for Wolverhampton Wanderers
While Doherty's departure marks the end of an era for Wolves, his move to Sheffield United could see him return to the Premier League next season. The defender was a key figure in Wolves' League One and Championship title wins, as well as their European campaigns.
What comes next?
Doherty will now look to help Chris Wilder's side secure promotion back to the top flight. The Blades finished 13th in the Championship last season, but with Doherty's experience and leadership, they will be aiming for a much-improved campaign.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder praised Doherty's qualities, saying: "There's no doubting we are getting a player here who knows what it takes to be successful. You've got to be a seriously good player to have played as many times as he has for the likes of Wolves, Spurs and Atletico Madrid."
