Wolverhampton Wanderers have paid a heartfelt tribute to Matt Doherty as the Ireland defender's departure from the club has been confirmed. Doherty spent 13 years at Molineux, making 389 appearances for the club and writing his name into the record books. He will leave at the end of his current contract this summer, having been a key player for the club during his time there. Doherty's popularity within the dressing room was highlighted in an article on the club website, which praised his 'dry humour, wit and laid-back nature'. The 34-year-old Ireland international will be on the lookout for a new club ahead of his official departure on June 30. During his time at Wolves, Doherty made over 300 appearances and scored 28 goals before moving to Tottenham in the summer of 2020. He returned to the club three years later and made another 87 appearances in all competitions, most recently at centre-back. Wolves technical director, Matt Jackson, paid tribute to Doherty, saying: 'It's rare to get actual 'club men' in the modern game, but Doc is definitely a Wolverhampton Wanderers man, through and through.' He added: 'He's been absolutely exceptional throughout the 13 years he's spent at the club, both on the pitch and with the leadership he displays off it.' Doherty's departure marks the end of an era for the club, but his legacy will live on at Molineux.
