Wolverhampton Wanderers have revealed their black third kit for the 2026/27 season. The launch completes the 'Alchemy of 1877' trilogy of shirts celebrating the club's 150th anniversary, as reported by Wolverhampton Wanderers FC this week.
This black shirt represents the darkening of base metals at the start of the alchemical process. Its design also nods to the club's historic motto, 'Out of darkness cometh light'. The shirt features an intricate knit execution with a subtle coat of arms pattern woven into the fabric and is finished with gold trims. It is designed for both pitch and street wear and carries a special WW150 logo lock-up on the back. The kit supplier, SUDU, collaborated with first-team players during its development.
How were the anniversary kits designed?
Discussions about the special 150th anniversary collection began two years prior to this season. Club historian Peter Crump was involved in these talks, where the initial sentiment was for the change shirts to be white and black. Fans were also consulted on the designs through the Wolves Museum. The result is a collection that honors the club's journey from its 1877 founding at St Luke's through the lens of alchemy. The home shirt is old gold, the away shirt is white, and this new third kit is black.
Peter Crump said: "I’m pleased to see the final shirt for this season, I really like the simplicity and tidiness of the shirt but also the pattern is in the background like the home shirt too, which is a nod to Wolverhampton."
What is the history of black shirts at Wolves?
The first black away shirt for Wolverhampton Wanderers arrived in 2003. Before that, black was traditionally reserved for match officials and was not used for team kits. Since their introduction, black away shirts have been consistently well received by the supporters. This new third kit continues that popular tradition while fitting into the larger anniversary theme.
What about the goalkeeper kit?
A new third goalkeeper shirt accompanies the outfield kit. It is a high-visibility limelight yellow colour and features a striped heritage design. This provides goalkeepers with a distinct and classic option for the campaign. You can view the full squad, including the goalkeepers who will wear it, on our squad page.
When can fans buy the new third kit?
The 2026/27 third kit will be available for purchase from Friday 28th August. It will be sold both online and in-store at the club's retail outlets. Peter Crump added, "I think it’s another excellent shirt and an ideal addition to the 150-shirt collection."
With the full kit collection now revealed, the focus returns to on-pitch matters. The team will wear these shirts throughout a season marking a major milestone in the club's history.
