Fer López has been honoured with the EFL's Goal Hero of the Month award for his decisive strike in the Black Country derby. The Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder's 50th-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion, a result that moved the club up to fourth in the Championship at the time.

López, 22, intercepted a misplaced pass from Nat Phillips before calmly slotting past goalkeeper Max O'Leary at Molineux. The goal was his fourth in his first seven league games for Wolves, establishing him as the team's top scorer this season with four goals in eight appearances. His celebration, a nod to Matheus Cunha's famous gesture from the clubs' 2024 FA Cup meeting, was premeditated after a club official showed him the video the day before the match.

A very special moment

"It was a very special moment," López said after receiving the award at the club's Compton training ground. "Before the game, an official showed me a video of Cunha that I hadn't seen, and I told him that if I scored I had to do that too."

The Spaniard acknowledged the weight of the occasion, which marked Wolves' first league victory over their local rivals in 15 years. The last such meeting was a Premier League fixture in 2021. "It's a crazy stat," López added. "It was a very important game for the fans, and we did half of the job - we need to do the other half when we play them away."

Growing into his role

López joined Wolves from Celta Vigo in 2025 and spent the second half of last season back on loan at his former club to gain experience. He admitted the initial transition to English football was challenging. "At the beginning it was very difficult, because I was living in Spain with such a different lifestyle with my family and everything," he explained. He believes that period was vital for his development, which is now paying dividends at Molineux.

The EFL award, created in partnership with Compare the Market, celebrates goals with a significant story behind them. An expert panel including former striker Robert Earnshaw selects the monthly winner. The presentation featured an appearance by the company's iconic meerkat mascot, Aleksandr.

Looking ahead

Despite the high of the derby win, Wolves' form has been mixed recently. Their last result was a 1-0 defeat away to Middlesbrough, with Will Lankshear scoring the only goal. The team's recent form reads one win, one draw and three losses from their last five outings. They will look to bounce back immediately in their next fixture, a home match against Bolton Wanderers.

López's immediate focus is on contributing to a promotion push. "Wolves is a very historical club," he said. "They were there eight years in a row [in the Premier League], so that was a shame going down, but we have to go straight back up again." Fans can track the squad's progress and see the latest standings as the season develops.
